K-Lite Codec Pack Mega – Large Collection of Codecs
To be able to play certain media formats, a media player needs codecs – and this is where the Codec Guide-developed K-Lite Codec Pack comes in. It is a very nice collection of codecs, DirectShow filters, and tools that will come in handy for playing multimedia content. There are several K-Lite Codec Pack versions to choose from; out of them all, the Mega version comes with the largest collection of codecs and tools.
The K-Lite Codec Pack Mega installation file is little over 24MB in size. Download and run it for a setup wizard to show up and guide you through the installation process. The aforementioned setup wizard asks you to pick between a Simple Mode (skips many options), a Normal Mode (all options are shown; the pack is installed in its default location), and an Advanced Mode (you can specify a custom install location). Assuming you go with the Normal Mode, you will be then asked to pick a profile, choose some additional tasks and options, select decoding options for hardware acceleration, select the player for which you would like to create associations, choose the file associations for said media player, pick the speaker configuration, and choose if you want the StartNow Toolbar, change your homepage to StartNow, and make Yahoo! your default search provider.
As mentioned above, the Mega edition of the K-Lite Codec Pack comes with the largest collection of codecs and tools. Just to put things in perspective, here’s a quick look at what the pack contains: Media Player Classic; multiple DirectShow video decoding filters, audio decoding filters, source filters, and a subtitle filter; VFW video codecs; ACM audio codecs; Codec Tweak, Haalu Muzer and other tools; several shell extensions. To sum it up, you are presented with all you need in order to play any video and audio file you can think of. And you’re even provided with a media player, just in case you don’t have one.
